As the population of our world grows larger and larger, and the natural resources available diminish, we have been forced to look at blending resources together to meet the increased demand. These combinations of combining resources together can be defined as hybrids.
A specific example of a hybrid includes a melding of plant genes in order to produce a crop that is drought and insect resistant. The resulting hybrid product may increase the food supply of the world. Other hybrids include the breeding of animals that combine the right combination of features that meet the needs of hunters and farmers.
Today, because of the price of gasoline and other environmental factors, a mode of personal transportation has gained popularity amongst drivers. The Hybrid Car is a vehicle that combines the use of two types of energy sources and provides many benefits.
Battery Power
A critical power source for the Hybrid Car is the battery. A battery found in a Hybrid Car is similar to a traditional automobile battery. Both batteries are rechargeable, however that is where the similarity ends.
The battery found in a conventional automobile is primarily used for starting the engine. This short burst of energy will allow for the engine to “turn over”. In addition the battery operates the accessories of the car which include the radio, power windows and locks, lighting, etc. These features run off the battery when the engine is not running. Additionally the battery is kept charged through the function of the alternator.
The battery found in a Hybrid Car is completely different in structure and its capability of storing energy. Before modifications, this particular battery was quite big and heavy. Today, the battery is made from Nickel-Metal-Hydride. This style of battery is light-weight in nature and has the capability of storing more electrical power. The battery found in a Hybrid Car is measured in kilowatt-amp-hours.
The power generated by the battery then works in concert with the combustion engine of the Hybrid Car to efficiently power the auto. The use of electric energy alone or in combination with the engine provides the maximum use of resources.
Combination Power Benefits
The combustion engine found in a Hybrid Car still requires fuel in its operation. This fuel can be in the form of gasoline, diesel, ethanol or hydrogen. The benefits of the combination between electric and fuel burning power equates to a fuel efficient and clean burning engine that can provide, for some hybrid cars, up to 66 miles per gallon. These benefits are realized as the Hybrid Car never idles and operates as an electric car when traveling at low speeds.
Additionally, an added benefit includes a decrease in emissions to the environment by over one half in comparison to a traditional automobile.
